    Choosing the right needle

    1. Needle type: Choose the most suitable needle type for the fabric you are sewing. ie. Jeans for densely woven fabrics, stretch for Lycra style fabrics and sharps leather for skins and suede. See out item descriptions if you are unsure of which to choose for your project.

    2. Needle size: Choosing the right size of needle for the fabric you are stitching can make the all difference to a smooth stitch. Thicker fabrics will require thicker needles and fine fabrics need finer needles.

    3. Thread: By choosing the most suitable thread for the size of needle you are going to be using you will get the best results. Top stitching for jeans, polyester for stretch and cotton for cotton. always buy the best quality thread you can afford, it is always worth the money. We would always recommend Guttermann brand thread.

    Replacing needles

    Machine needles should be replaced after a maximum or 8 hours of sewing. You may need to replace them more often if you are sewing with synthetic fabrics, appliqués or doing machine embroidery. This will avoid skipped stitches, fabric pulls and frayed thread.

    Breaking needles

    Machine needles are designed to break to protect your sewing machines hook mechanism. If a needle bends- do not sew with it. When a machine needle breaks it is a warning to check the following;

    • the needle size is correct
    • the thread is too thick or unsuitable for needle or the fabric
    • the machine may have become un-threaded
    • the tensions may have slipped
    • the machine may need to be cleaned
    • the wrong foot may be fitted
    • the wrong stitch may be selected
    • the thread may have been caught in the mechanism
    • the fabric may be being pulled , pushed or dragged

    If using a twin needle, avoid per longed usage due to heat build up which may cause breaks.
